in Windows 11, allowing PCs to run some Android applications without
installing a traditional virtual machine or other utility. The feature
has been updated a few times since then, and now another update is
rolling out that further improves the Android app experience on Windows.<p></p><p>Microsoft has released an update for the Windows Subsystem for Android, version number 2306.40000.4.0, in <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/810570/windows-insider-program-everything-you-need-to-know/">all Insider channels</a> of Windows 11. It comes after <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/898166/more-improvements-are-coming-to-android-apps-on-windows-11/">the last major update</a>
added true file sharing between the Windows and Android environments,
allowing you to open files from your PC in an Android application
without moving them to a specific folder first. The new update includes a
fix for OneDrive folders not appearing in Android apps, and dragging
and dropping files between Windows and Android apps now works with more
file types.</p><p></p><p>The new Windows Subsystem for Android update also improves networking
support, with a new "Local network" option replacing "Advanced
networking" in the advanced section of the settings app. Local
networking allows Android apps to connect to other devices on your PC's
network, while still respecting Windows firewall rules and any active
VPN connections. That opens the door for Android apps to support LAN
gaming, direct streaming for security cameras and other local devices,
and other use cases that were previously unavailable.</p>

<p>There are a few other minor changes, such as the inclusion of
Google's latest Android 13 security updates, an updated Linux kernel
(it's now on version 5.15.104), new buttons in the picture-in-picture
mode, camera compatibility improvements, and better permissions prompts.</p>

<p>This Windows Subsystem for Android update is still limited to Windows
Insider builds, but it should soon roll out to all Windows 11 PCs with
the Subsystem installed, once any critical bugs have been fixed. If you
want to try out the Subsystem on your Windows PC, check out <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/764014/how-to-install-android-apps-on-windows-11/">our guide for installing Android apps on Windows 11</a>.
There's still no Google Play Store, so many popular applications and
games are still missing without sideloading Google services first.
Google has its own <a class="norewrite noskim" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/dlg/sid/UUhtgUeUpU904545/https://play.google.com/googleplaygames" rel="sponsored nofollow">Google Play Games desktop application</a> for that, which is compatible with both Windows 10 and Windows 11.</p><p> </p><p><br /> </p>

syntax, launch Command Prompt with admin rights, update your Windows
version, or repair Windows' corrupted system files.<p></p><p>Getting an "Error: 87" message while running the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/222532/how-to-repair-corrupted-windows-system-files-with-the-sfc-and-dism-commands/">DISM command on your PC</a>?
This is a pretty common error and you can fix it with ease. We'll show
you multiple ways to get around this issue on your Windows 11 or Windows
 10 computer.</p>

<h2 id="make-sure-you-type-the-correct-command"> Make Sure You Type the Correct Command </h2>
<p>The most common reason you get an error 87 while running the DISM
command is that you've typed the command incorrectly. You may have added
an extra space or removed a space where it's absolutely required.</p><p>To get around that, enter your DISM command just as it should be: with a single space between your parameters.</p>

<p>Here's an example of an incorrectly typed DISM command:</p>

<pre>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image/Restorehealth</pre>

<p>Note that there's no space between the <code>/Cleanup-image</code> and the <code>/Restorehealth</code> parameters. Once you add those spaces, which makes your command look like the following, your error 87 is resolved.</p>

<pre>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth</pre>
<div class="ad-odd">
</div>

<h2 id="run-command-prompt-as-admin"> Run Command Prompt as Admin </h2>
<p>Another reason you get an error running the DISM command is that you're using Command Prompt without <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/709060/what-does-run-as-administrator-mean-in-windows-10/">admin privileges</a>. This command requires admin rights to properly function.</p>

<p>To fix that, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/194041/how-to-open-the-command-prompt-as-administrator-in-windows-10/">launch Command Prompt as an admin</a>. Do that by opening your PC's "Start" menu, finding "Command Prompt", and selecting "Run as Administrator."</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://static1.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-open-cmd-as-administrator.png?q=50&fit=crop&w=750&dpr=1.5" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="428" data-original-width="730" height="375" src="https://static1.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1-open-cmd-as-administrator.png?q=50&fit=crop&w=750&dpr=1.5" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Make sure to choose "Yes" in the "User Account Control" prompt. Then, run your DISM command, and it will work just as expected.</p>
<div class="ad-even">
</div>

<h2 id="update-windows"> Update Windows </h2>
<p>An outdated and buggy Windows version can cause your system commands
to malfunction. This may be the case with your DISM command.</p>

<p>You can try to resolve your system issues by updating your Windows
version. Newer versions bring the latest bug fixes that patch the
existing issues in your system.</p>

<p>To <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/748690/how-to-update-windows-11/">update a Windows 11 PC</a>,
navigate to Settings > Windows Update. On the right pane, click
"Check for Updates" and download and install the available updates.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://static1.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2-update-windows-11.png?q=50&fit=crop&w=750&dpr=1.5" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="319" data-original-width="729" height="280" src="https://static1.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/2-update-windows-11.png?q=50&fit=crop&w=750&dpr=1.5" width="640" /></a></div>If you're <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/343979/what-is-the-latest-version-of-windows-10/">on Windows 10</a>,
head into Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. On
the right, click "Check for Updates" and download and install the latest
 updates.<p></p><p></p><h2 id="fix-windows-39-corrupted-files"> Fix Windows' Corrupted Files </h2>
<p>If your Windows' system files have become corrupted, that can cause
system features not to work. Your DISM command error 87 may be the
result of corrupted system files.</p>

<p>In this case, use a built-in Windows command to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/222532/how-to-repair-corrupted-windows-system-files-with-the-sfc-and-dism-commands/">find and fix your system's broken files</a>. It looks like Microsoft is almost ready to roll it out to everyone, based on a statement provided to Microsoft 365 admins.</p><p>Microsoft is alerting administrators to the upcoming rollout, which will
replace the abandoned Windows 10-era Mail and Calendar applications
with the new Outlook application. According to <em>Bleeping Computer</em>,
the company said, "At the end of 2024 we will be ending support for the
Mail and Calendar apps for Windows. The new Outlook for Windows helps
people be more productive and in control of their inbox. In late August
of 2023, we will also begin a process of auto-migrating Mail &
Calendar app users to the new Outlook for Windows with an option to go
back if they choose."</p><p>Notably, the migration will not affect the current legacy Outlook for
Windows (the version included in paid Microsoft 365 plans or Office
packages). It's possible the new Outlook application is still missing a
few important features compared to the current version, so the upgrade
won't be forced on anyone using the current Outlook for Windows.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://static1.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Outlook-Spring_1-1024x577.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=750&dpr=1.5" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="423" data-original-width="750" height="361" src="https://static1.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Outlook-Spring_1-1024x577.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=750&dpr=1.5" width="640" /></a></div><br /> The new Outlook for Windows is based on the Outlook.com web app, with an
overhauled design and improved integration with other Microsoft 365
services. It has a more modern appearance, matching the <a href="https://fluent2.microsoft.design/">Fluent design language</a> used across Windows 11, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/881832/microsoft-teams-is-now-faster-with-a-windows-11-like-design/">the new Microsoft Teams</a>,
and other Microsoft software. It also has both light and dark modes, so
no matter which mode your PC is using, Outlook should fit right in. We
still don't know when, or if, this new application will replace Outlook
for Mac.<p></p><p>You might be able to try out the new Outlook application by clicking the
"Try the new Outlook" toggle in the upper-right corner of the Mail or
Calendar apps on Windows — that switch isn't available on my PC, but
it's showing up on other people's machines. The same toggle should also
be visible in the current (legacy) Outlook application. <br /></p>

<p><img alt="Windows 11 logo" class="type:primaryImage aligncenter size-full wp-image-873389" data-pagespeed-no-defer="" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/windows-11-2.jpg?width=1198&trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>The first wave of ARM-based Windows tablets, like the Surface RT, had
32-bit ARM chipsets. However, Windows 11 required a 64-bit ARM device
from the start, and now Microsoft is dropping support for 32-bit ARM
applications entirely. </p><p>Microsoft is now rolling out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25905 to the Canary Channel for <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/810570/windows-insider-program-everything-you-need-to-know/">Windows Insiders</a>.
The update completely removes support for 32-bit ARM UWP applications,
with a list of affected applications appearing during the setup process.
If there is another compatible version of the application on the
Microsoft Store, it will appear as an app update in the Store before the
Windows update is installed — you might need to click the “Get Updates”
button in the Library page of the Store for that to work. After the
Windows update is installed, your only option is uninstalling the
incompatible app and trying to download it again from the Microsoft
Store, where Windows will obtain a compatible version if there’s one
available.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-24" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>So, why is Microsoft doing this? Well, Qualcomm’s modern chipsets
(which power all existing ARM Windows 10 and 11 devices) have limited
support for 32-bit ARM software, and future chips are expected to <a href="https://9to5google.com/2023/03/23/snapdragon-8-gen-3-core-leak/">not have any 32-bit cores at all</a>.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-62" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>The good news is that this probably won’t affect many applications.
Most, if not all, 32-bit ARM Windows applications are also available in
x86 versions intended for mainstream PCs, which Windows 11 can <a data-trxnetwork="ls" href="https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&mid=24542&u1=htg/904206|xid:fr1689323811aaa&murl=https%3A%2F%2Flearn.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fwindows%2Farm%2Fapps-on-arm-x86-emulation">emulate on ARM devices</a>. The emulated apps might run a little bit slower than they would otherwise, but they’ll at least work.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-63" id="bordeaux-static-slot-26" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>It’s also worth noting that Microsoft’s announcement doesn’t mention
Win32 applications at all, like the early versions of Microsoft Office
for ARM. It’s not clear if those apps will stop working too, and if so,
when that might happen. Many of those applications have been updated to
64-bit ARM or have x86 alternatives available that can be emulated.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-64" id="bordeaux-static-slot-27" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>The removal of 32-bit ARM support is only live in the Canary testing
channel for now, so it will be several weeks or months before the change

I totally get you. You jot down
stuff, but somehow it always ends up scattered and hard to navigate
later. Google wants to make notetaking easier with a new AI tool, which
it’s dubbing “NotebookML.” And it’s now available for testing if you
want to give it a shot. </p><p>Google has had a struggling start to its generative AI efforts, despite
being one of the companies at the forefront of AI innovation for years.
The <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/880668/google-bard-how-to-use-googles-ai-chatbot/">Bard chatbot</a>
was released recently and, at least in its beginnings, was found to be
considerably worse in a lot of things than competitors such as ChatGPT
or Bing Chat. To that effect, NotebookLM isn’t really a chatbot, at
least not one in the traditional way. Instead, it’s a language model
that you can train using your own notes and sources, as scattered as
they are. It will read all of your stuff and make an attempt to put it
together in an organized manner.</p><p><img alt="Google NotebookLM image" class="size-full wp-image-904230" height="455" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/DocumentGuide-Keyword-V2.width-1000.format-webp.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p><p>More importantly, it has a chatbot component that’s, again, trained
on the data you put. This can be useful for several scenarios. For
example, you’re feeding NotebookLM your class notes from school, and
once you’ve done that, you can ask the AI questions about the topic in
hand — it will study and understand what you asked it to save, and
answer your questions to the best of its ability. You can even ask it
for help to come up with more creative stuff based on what you provided
to it. It’s an AI, thinking like an AI, except its pool of knowledge
isn’t the general one that most AIs are trained with but rather it’s
trained on the knowledge you provided to it.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-62" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>This AI should be an amazing resource for students and researchers
since it makes the process of researching and studying something much
easier. By making source content easier to interact with, and letting
you ask questions, it’s much easier to understand something by using it.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-63" id="bordeaux-static-slot-26" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>

temporary server problem, so you may just need to wait. Check your
internet connection to make sure that you're connected to the internet,
and then make sure that your Mac's time is set correctly. Failing this,
consider installing macOS manually with a USB drive instead. </p><p>Are you receiving an unhelpful error while trying to restore your Mac
or reinstall macOS? The “recovery server could not be contacted” error
shows up mostly in Recovery Mode, but may affect the macOS upgrade and
install process too. Here are some things you can try to solve the issue
 for good.</p>
<div class="autotoc_wrapper"><strong class="moka_autotoc_heading">Table of Contents</strong><p></p><blockquote class="moka_autotoc"><p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/898654/how-to-fix-the-recovery-server-could-not-be-contacted-mac-error/#autotoc_anchor_0">Check You're Connected to the Internet</a><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/898654/how-to-fix-the-recovery-server-could-not-be-contacted-mac-error/#autotoc_anchor_1">Make Sure the Time and Date Are Correct</a><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/898654/how-to-fix-the-recovery-server-could-not-be-contacted-mac-error/#autotoc_anchor_2">Install macOS Manually via USB</a><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/898654/how-to-fix-the-recovery-server-could-not-be-contacted-mac-error/#autotoc_anchor_3">Alternatively, Wait and Try Again Later</a><br /></p></blockquote></div>
	<div style="clear: both;"></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_0"></a>Check You’re Connected to the Internet</h2>
<p>It might sound obvious, but not being connected to the internet will
make it impossible for your Mac to contact any servers required for
recovery, updates, or installation of macOS.</p>
<p>You can click on the Wi-Fi icon in the top-right corner of your
screen and make sure that you are indeed connected to a Wi-Fi network.
Simply being connected to a local network doesn’t guarantee internet
connectivity though, so it’s also worth <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/126265/how-to-troubleshoot-internet-connection-problems/">checking if the internet connection is working</a> by testing on other devices connected to your network.</p><p><img alt="An Arris modem set up behind a couch" class="size-medium wp-image-898854" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/52900608255_f885b8bf06_o.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>If you suspect that the problem is your network hardware or local internet connection, try <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/428992/how-to-reboot-your-router-and-modem/">power-cycling your modem and router</a> by turning it off, waiting up to 30 seconds, then switching everything back on and trying again.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Make Sure the Time and Date Are Correct</h2>
<p>Apple’s servers will sometimes refuse to play ball with a Mac if the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/700425/how-to-customize-the-time-and-date-in-mac-menu-bar/">time and date</a>
are set incorrectly. Take a look at your Mac’s clock and make sure it’s
set correctly. On a standard modern Mac desktop, you can head to System
Settings (or System Preferences) > General > Date and Time. Check
“Set time and date automatically” to set your time using Apple’s
servers.</p><p><img alt="Set time and date automatically on macOS" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-898855" height="303" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/time_and_date_macos.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>If you’re stuck <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/393221/how-to-fix-mac-startup-problems-using-recovery-mode/">in Recovery Mode</a>, you can use a Terminal command to set the time manually. First launch Terminal under Utilities > Terminal.</p><pre>date mmddhhssyy</pre>
<p>To clarify, <code>mm</code> is the month, <code>dd</code> is the day, <code>hh</code> is the hour, <code>ss</code> is the minute, and <code>yy</code> is the year. So June 30, 2023 at 4.24 pm would be <code>0630162423</code> .</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>You can also try using the following Terminal command on macOS 10.14 Mojave or later to set the time automatically:</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-62" id="bordeaux-static-slot-26" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<pre>sudo sntp -sS time.apple.com</pre>
<p>If you’re running macOS 10.13 High Sierra or earlier you can instead use:</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-63" id="bordeaux-static-slot-27" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<pre>sudo ntpdate -u time.apple.com</pre>
<p>Since you’re using the <code>sudo</code> command you will need to
authenticate with your admin password when doing this. Once you’re
confident the time is set correctly, try again.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Install macOS Manually via USB</h2>
<p>Rather than relying on your Mac to download the software right before
you install it, consider downloading macOS yourself and installing it
from USB instead. Check out <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/737510/how-to-download-and-install-older-versions-of-macos/">our full guide for a USB install</a> (which includes support for older versions of macOS), though be aware you will need a working Mac to make it happen.</p><p><img alt="A thumb drive sitting open on a wood table" class="size-medium wp-image-898857" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/52848595313_10a16acb73_o.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>If you choose to install macOS without first erasing your drive, you
will keep your existing user data. If you’d rather have a fresh install
you can choose to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/764643/how-to-clean-install-macos-the-easy-way/">erase your Mac the easy way</a>, or <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/212836/how-to-use-disk-utility-on-a-mac/">use Disk Utility in Recovery Mode to erase your macOS partition</a>. If you go this route make sure you <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/192533/how-to-back-up-your-mac-and-restore-files-with-time-machine/">back up first with Time Machine</a>, where possible.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Alternatively, Wait and Try Again Later</h2>
<p>Sometimes server errors are caused by temporary glitches. If a server
goes down for maintenance or is under heavy load, you might see an
error that says it’s not contactable. If waiting is an option, try
giving it an hour or two before trying the operation again.</p>
<p>If USB restoring your old Mac is the only option, consider <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/881314/how-to-install-unsupported-versions-of-macos-on-your-mac/">installing an unsupported version of macOS</a> instead.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

<p><img alt="Microsoft 365 logo" class="type:primaryImage aligncenter size-full wp-image-888941" data-pagespeed-no-defer="" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/microsoft-365-2.jpg?width=1198&trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Microsoft has been using Calibri as the default font across Office
applications and services since 2007, replacing Times New Roman and
Arial. Now there’s a new default font coming to a Word document near
you: Aptos.</p><p>Back in 2021, Microsoft <a href="https://medium.com/microsoft-design/beyond-calibri-finding-the-next-microsoft-365-default-font-5ef83f028be2">released five new fonts</a>
it commissioned as possible replacements for Calibri. The new fonts
— Tenorite, Bierstadt, Skeena, Seaford, and Grandview — have been
available for use in Microsoft 365 applications and services since
then. Bierstadt was apparently the most popular out of those options,
and it now becoming the default font, but with a name change to Aptos.
The font will become the default for new Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
documents, and it will also be used in Outlook.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-24" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Microsoft explained in a blog post, “The typeface was created by
Steve Matteson, one of the world’s leading type designers. His previous
work includes the development of the original Windows TrueType core
fonts and the creation of Segoe. Steve renamed the typeface he designed
from Bierstadt to Aptos after his favorite unincorporated town in Santa
Cruz, California, whose widely ranging landscape and climate epitomizes
the font’s versatility. The fog, beaches, redwood trees, and mountains
of Aptos summed up everything that he loved about California. Getting
away from digital and evoking the outdoors was akin to getting back to
pencil and paper. Drawing letters by hand would play a pivotal role in
Steve’s creative process.”</p><p><img alt="Aptos font image" class="size-full wp-image-904322" height="347" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/1_N6Br2BGVIJnuWwL2lCQBRQ.jpeg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p><p>The font’s new name comes from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aptos,_California">Aptos, California</a>,
with the town’s “widely ranging landscape and climate epitomizes the
font’s versatility,” according to Microsoft. The previous name came
from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Bierstadt">Mount Bierstadt</a> in Colorado, which in turn was named after painter <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Bierstadt">Albert Bierstadt</a>
who climbed the mountain in 1863. The name can translate to “Beer Town”
in English. Microsoft’s blog post didn’t give a specific reason for the
change from Bierstadt to Aptos, except “as there was a change of guard
so too the name.”</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-63" id="bordeaux-static-slot-26" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>You’ll still be able to change the default font in all Microsoft 365
applications, just as you can right now, if you’re not a fan of the new
look. It also won’t be automatically applied to any existing documents,
so you don’t need to worry about sudden formatting changes or other
potential issues.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-64" id="bordeaux-static-slot-27" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>

Now, it’s getting even better with the addition of some new features.</p><p>1Password has also simplified logins by remembering which sign-in
method you prefer on each website, and it will also autofill your name
on forms and websites, as to make things easier for you. And while it
also supports common sign-in providers such as Apple, Google, and
Facebook, 1Password is also adding some additional ones, including
Amazon and Discord this summer — and more of them should also be coming

<p><img alt="Reddit comment thread." class="type:primaryImage size-full wp-image-903644" data-pagespeed-no-defer="" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/reddit-comments.jpg?width=1198&trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Astroturfing is creating fake comments and reviews to sway people's thoughts on products, ideas, and other people.</p><p>When you hear the word “AstroTurf,” you might first think of artificial
grass. However, on the internet, “astroturfing” means something entirely
different. You may think you know what people are saying online, but
you could be wrong.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">What Is Astroturfing?</h2>
<p>Simply put, astroturfing is the act of creating fake comments or
reviews in order to fool real people into thinking a certain way about
something. Technically, astroturfing predates the internet—it was also
used in “Letters to the Editor” pages in newspapers—but it’s become much
 more prevalent online.</p>
<p>Astroturfing is used for all sorts of purposes. However, there are a few areas where you should be particularly mindful of it.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-60" id="bordeaux-static-slot-24" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Many people have most likely <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/407521/how-fake-reviews-are-manipulating-you-online/">encountered astroturfing while shopping on Amazon</a>.
Reviews are incredibly important on Amazon, and sellers are well aware
of this fact. So, to infuse their products with favorable reviews,
sellers will utilize bots or bribe real buyers to leave favorable
reviews.</p><p>Another popular place for astroturfing is Reddit. One of Reddit’s best
features is the huge wealth of information from real humans—it’s why so
many people have started <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/836756/you-keep-searching-reddit-with-google-so-now-its-a-feature/">appending Google searches with “Reddit.”</a> That’s
exactly what makes it perfect for astroturfing. Offenders can find
threads about people, causes, or products and seed them with favorable
or unfavorable comments.</p><p>The same general idea applies to astroturfing in a wide variety of
places online. Twitter accounts, Facebook pages, Instagram comments,
movie reviews, unlabeled sponsored articles, comment sections on news
websites, etc. Astroturfing is theoretically possible anywhere that
human input is welcomed and presented for everyone to see.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">How to Spot Fake Reviews and Comments</h2>
<p><img alt="" role="presentation" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/fakespot-review-quality.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" /></p>
<p>With all this talk of fake reviews and comments, you might be
wondering if there’s any way to spot astroturfing. Thankfully, there are
some tools and practices you can use to help pick out the bad actors.</p>
<p>Amazon is actually pretty good at detecting reviews left by bots or AI—though that may not be the case as <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895254/the-line-between-chatgpt-and-bing-chat-is-blurring/">generative AI tools like ChatGPT</a> continue to advance. <a href="https://fakespot.com/">FakeSpot.com</a>
is a great website for checking Amazon reviews. Simply enter a product
page URL and you’ll get a grade along with a rating based only on the
detected trustworthy reviews. It’s good for <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/331228/how-to-spot-fake-and-scammy-amazon-seller/">finding fake sellers, too</a>.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-62" id="bordeaux-static-slot-26" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Sadly, there aren’t easy tools to spot astroturfing in most other
places on the internet. Instead, you’ll need to take matters into your
own hands. There are a few things to take into consideration:</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-63" id="bordeaux-static-slot-27" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<ul><li><strong>Look at Dates:</strong> If there are a lot of highly positive reviews in a short span of time, it could mean they were paid for.</li><li><strong>Pay Attention to Grammar:</strong> Fake reviews are often
sourced from people in countries where English is not the native
language. For example, someone might say the price is “1000 USD,” which
is not how most Americans would type “$1,000.”</li><li><strong>Visit Their Profile:</strong> This is especially useful on
websites such as Reddit, where everyone has a public-facing profile. Are
all of their comments or reviews exactly the same? Do they only comment
about one specific topic or product?</li></ul>
<p>Most astroturfing isn’t super difficult to spot if you take the time
to look, but it works because most people don’t ever think about it.
Simply being aware of it and having a healthy dose of skepticism will
make it easier to spot the next time you’re browsing Amazon reviews or a
 Reddit thread.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

<p><img alt="Windows desktop." class="type:primaryImage size-full wp-image-871969" data-pagespeed-no-defer="" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/DESKTOP-FOLDER.png?width=1198&trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />People are passionate about how the desktop on your PC or Mac should
look. Show someone a cluttered desktop full of files and you’ll probably
hear a repulsed gasp. Don’t feel bad about storing files on the
desktop. Everyone should do it.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">The Desktop Is Not a Launcher</h2>
<p>The way we use computers has changed drastically over the years.
There was a time when it made sense to use the desktop as your sort of
“launcher” for things to do. Nowadays, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/866279/its-time-to-stop-using-desktop-icons/">it’s not necessary to put icons on the desktop</a>. We have better methods for launching apps and finding files.</p><p>Think about it: how often do you actually <em>use</em> your desktop? There’s a good chance you launch apps from the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/821493/how-to-get-the-windows-10-start-menu-on-windows-11/">Start Menu</a>, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/207935/what-is-os-xs-launchpad-and-how-does-it-work/">Launchpad</a>, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/853679/10-windows-11-taskbar-features-you-should-be-using/">taskbar</a>,
or dock most of the time. Apps that haven’t been pinned for quick
access can easily be found by searching the Start Menu or Launchpad, and
the same can be said for files.</p><p>A lot of people look at a messy desktop and say, “how can you find
anything on there!?” Well, you don’t have to. We have much better ways
of finding and launching things on computers now.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">It’s Just a Folder</h2>
<p><img alt="Windows and Mac desktop folders." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-872082" height="341" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/2023-02-09_16-41-51a.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Here’s the truth: the desktop is just a <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/769913/the-computer-folder-is-40-how-the-xerox-star-created-the-desktop/">folder</a>. Open <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/864665/10-windows-file-explorer-features-you-should-be-using/">File Explorer</a> on your Windows PC or <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/716913/what-is-finder-on-a-mac/">Finder on your Mac</a>
and you’ll see it plain as day. People act like the desktop is hallowed
ground, but it’s really just another area to store stuff.</p><p>Personally, I have always <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/766068/how-to-create-a-folder-on-desktop-in-windows-11/">used the desktop as a place to store things</a>
that I know I won’t need forever. Things like images downloaded from
the internet that I want to share with a friend or on social media,
files I need for a specific one-time task, or current projects that I
don’t want to bury in folders within folders.</p><p>I use the desktop as an easily accessible folder, and I think that’s the
beauty of it. The fact that it’s the “Desktop” makes it super easy to
find anything stored on it. You can quickly view the desktop from
anywhere and it’s easy to find it in File Explorer or Finder.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Use It Like a Literal Desktop</h2>
<p>The funny thing is I use the desktop like the literal top of a
physical desk. When I look around my computer desk, I see an assortment
of things that represent what I’m working on at the moment. That’s
exactly what my computer desktop is like.</p><p>I have a filing cabinet for storing important documents I need to keep,
and I have special places for photos as well. On my computer, I have a <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/969/moving-your-personal-data-folders-in-windows-vista-the-easy-way/">Documents folder and Photos folder</a>. Not everything in my real life or digital life needs to be stored indefinitely in these locations.</p><p>I find I can keep my entire computer and physical workspace tidier if
I have somewhere to put temporary things. It’s much easier to clean off
a desk or delete all the files from the desktop than to go looking for
things in long-term storage.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Look, if a messy desktop gives you anxiety, I’m not going to tell you
to store files on it. But if you’re avoiding using the desktop just
because it’s the desktop, you should give it a second thought. You might
 love it.</p><p>Want to give it a try? Maybe it’s time to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/437370/how-to-hide-or-unhide-all-desktop-icons-on-windows/">unhide those Windows desktop icons</a>. <br /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

As a result, it has come to the world’s attention with the same
aggressive marketing tactics; let’s see if it lives up to its hype.</p>
<p>Overall, NordVPN belongs among the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/780233/best-password-manager/">best password managers</a>,
though only by its fingernails. As a business option, it’s one of the
best out there, but its offerings for individuals fall flat, mainly
thanks to a confusing and slightly misleading pricing scheme.</p><div class="autotoc_wrapper"><strong class="moka_autotoc_heading">Table of Contents</strong><p></p><blockquote class="moka_autotoc"><p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_0">How Much Does NordPass Cost?</a><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_1" style="margin-left: 10px;">Is NordPass Included With NordVPN?</a></small><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_2" style="margin-left: 10px;">NordPass Business Plans</a></small><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_3">Using NordPass</a><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_4" style="margin-left: 10px;">The NordPass Client</a></small><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_5" style="margin-left: 10px;">Autofill and Other Features</a></small><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_6">Is NordPass Safe?</a><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_7">Should You Sign Up for NordPass?</a><br /></p></blockquote></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_0"></a>How Much Does NordPass Cost?</h2>
<p>When it comes to pricing, NordPass falls more or less within the same
range as the competition, though it’s far from straightforward to
figure out. There are different plans, and, like with NordVPN, the price
for first-time users is significantly lower than for anybody renewing
their subscription.</p>
<p>The first and maybe most interesting plan is the free one, which
offers all the basic functionality you’d expect from a password manager.
You can store all the passwords and other data you’d like, with the
only downside being a minor annoyance that you’re signed out whenever
you switch devices.</p><p>The paid plan removes this annoyance and adds a password as well as a
web scanner, which detects if any of your accounts have been breached.
However, there are some issues with pricing. For example, if you decide
to sign up for the regular plan for just one year, you pay just south of
 $24, which is a great price.</p>
<p><img alt="NordPass pricing for one year" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882894" height="406" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-1-year-pricing.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>However, when you renew, you pay just under $36, which is more or
less the same as what other password managers charge. Like with its
siblings <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/757119/surfshark-vs-nordvpn/">NordVPN and Surfshark</a>,
you need to look a little beyond the sticker price with NordPass to see
what it will cost a little further down the road. This is even more
important if you sign on for the two-year plan.</p><p><img alt="NordPass pricing for two years" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882895" height="398" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/NordPass-2-year-pricing.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>At just under $36, NordPass’ two year-plan is a great deal. However,
when you renew it, the password manager costs $72, which is double the
one-year plan. Sure, you’re saving money on the first go-around, but I
think NordPass should be a little clearer that it’s just a one-time
thing and you’re on the hook for the whole thing once the initial term
expires. </p><p>The Family plan suffers from the same issues but stands out in that
it’s more expensive than the competition. Its “real” price is $72 per
year, which gives you the same functionality of the regular plan only
for up to six people. At this price, it’s more expensive than 1Password
and almost double Bitwarden’s.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/877608/dashlane-password-manager-review/">Dashlane</a>
is a bit more expensive at $75 per year but includes a VPN for that
price, making that the better choice by far for people trying to squeeze
the most out of their subscriptions.</p><h3>Is NordPass Included With NordVPN?</h3>
<p>Speaking of VPNs, naturally, you can also buy a bundle that includes
both NordVPN and NordPass. Interestingly enough, NordVPN is the primary
product, so you buy that and get NordPass included, not the other way
around.</p>
<p>For the details of that pricing, you may want to check out my <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/850283/nordvpn-review/">NordVPN review</a>,
but overall I’m not blown away by the value on offer here. There are
some more shenanigans here, with steep discounts on first-time signup,
but the real price starts at $160 per year and goes higher—a lot
higher—from there.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-63" id="bordeaux-static-slot-26" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>In a market where you can get cheap VPNs like <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/849598/private-internet-access-vpn-review/">Private Internet Access</a> for $40 per year and even cheaper password managers like <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/874724/bitwarden-review/">Bitwarden</a> for $10 per year, paying $160 is just too much by any stretch of the imagination.</p><h3>NordPass Business Plans</h3>
<p>Finally, NordPass also offers a Business plan. It costs $3.99 per
user per month if you sign up for one year or $3.59 per user per month
on the two-year plan, without any re-up issues like with the personal
plans. For this price, you can have up to 250 users per plan, and you
get access to a company-wide dashboard and settings, plus SSO through
Google Workspace.</p>
<p>Overall, this is a pretty good deal. It’s a good whack cheaper than
most other password managers’ business plans, which start around $5 per
user per month but can get as high as $8. That said, different providers
throw in different extras with these advanced plans, so you should
definitely shop around before making any decisions.</p><p>There is also an Enterprise plan which offers more SSO options, plus
some other advanced sharing features. The price you’ll need to negotiate
 with NordPass.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-65" id="bordeaux-static-slot-28" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_3"></a>Using NordPass</h2>
<p>As much as I dislike NordPass’ pricing scheme, I have to say its ease
of use is pretty good, though I found it a little less smooth than some
other password managers. Part of this is unique to NordPass: For some
reason, the developers insist that you have to have a client running on
your desktop to use it rather than the web client most competitors use.</p>
<p>The client is available for <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aad/https://nordpass.com/download/windows/">Windows</a>, <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aae/https://nordpass.com/download/macos/">Mac</a>, and <a href="https://snapcraft.io/nordpass">Linux</a>.
However, I had some pretty serious issues getting it to work on my
Debian system (Mint 20.3, to be exact). After having the app crash more
than once, I switched to my backup Windows machine, where it worked a
lot better, though I did have to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/754945/how-to-restart-a-windows-11-pc/">restart Windows 11</a> twice. NordPass doesn’t get high marks for stability.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-66" id="bordeaux-static-slot-29" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Besides desktop, NordPass can also be used on mobile devices, namely <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aaf/https://nordpass.com/download/android/">Android</a> and <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aag/https://nordpass.com/download/ios/">iPhone/iPad</a>.
I had far fewer issues here, I have to say, so maybe the desktop issues
have more to do with the relative novelty of the OSes involved.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-67" id="bordeaux-static-slot-30" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h3><a name="autotoc_anchor_4"></a>The NordPass Client</h3>
<p>Once you get it working, the client is pretty good. The presentation
is slick, with clear categories for all the different kinds of items you
can add, like passwords, secure notes, credit cards, and more. I also
like how NordPass gets you familiar with the program using a small
checklist of tasks.</p><p><img alt="Getting started with NordPass" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882901" height="424" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Nordpass-main.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>The whole thing feels a lot more polished than most other password managers, with even top-shelf providers like <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/877608/dashlane-password-manager-review/">Dashlane</a>
feeling like throwbacks to an earlier era. However, it’s all surface
level, and once you start digging, you’ll find there’s not much beyond
that initial impression.</p><p><img alt="NordPass password list" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882902" height="425" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-passwords.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />NordPass presents entries well in a simple list that gives you a decent
summary of what’s going on. That said, there don’t seem to be any
organization options to speak of for each category, meaning that if you
have more than a few password entries, you’re going to have to search
for them manually. There are no tags like in <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/872414/1password-review/">1Password</a>.</p><p>The closest thing to organization is that you can add folders, but they
exist outside of the set options. For example, I created a folder for
all the media sites I have an account with, but it’s not nested under
the passwords label, instead existing alongside it. It makes it hard to
organize your passwords.</p><p>There are also few options for the entries themselves. Most password
managers give you the option to add all kinds of notes, or add extra
security—or even let some passwords be used automatically. None of that
with NordPass. You get to add a username, password, and a few custom
options, and that’s it, pretty much.</p><p><img alt="Adding an item in NordPass" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882896" height="428" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-add-item.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>As a result, NordPass is very easy for beginners to get to grasp with.
Some of our favorites like Dashlane or 1Password—not to mention <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/879987/keepassxc-password-manager-review/">KeePassXC</a>—
can be a bit intimidating for first-time users. However, I feel
NordPass has swung too far the other way, offering a program that’s just
 too light.</p><h3>Autofill and Other Features</h3>
<p>Of course, no password manager would be complete without a browser
extension. In the case of NordPass, the extension is available for <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aah/https://nordpass.com/download/chrome/">Chrome</a>, <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aai/https://nordpass.com/download/edge/">Microsoft Edge</a>, <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aaj/https://nordpass.com/download/firefox/">Mozilla Firefox</a>, <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aak/https://nordpass.com/download/opera/">Opera</a>, and <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aal/https://nordpass.com/download/safari/">Safari</a>.
It’s extremely lightweight, offering no menu or anything, all it does
is pop up a small NordPass icon on any empty login field.</p>
<p><img alt="NordPass autofill on Netflix site" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882897" height="430" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-autofill.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>I have to say, the autofill function works very well and is pretty
reliable. Also, since NordPass never seems to switch itself off, you
only need to unlock once per device session, so it saves some hassle.</p><p>Other basics that NordPass has included are the now-ubiquitous breach
scanner, which scans the web to see if any of your personal details
have shown up in breached files. It mainly seems to check if your email
accounts are associated with a hack, as far as I can tell.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-71" id="bordeaux-static-slot-34" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p><img alt="NordPass breach scanner" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882898" height="426" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-breach-scanner.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>There’s also a password checker that lets you know if your password
is strong or weak and how to fix any issues. It seems to have a strong
preference for symbols in passwords, but it’s solid overall.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Is NordPass Safe?</h2>
<p>Overall, NordPass seems to be a secure place to keep your passwords.
It stores all the information you enter, be it passwords, credit card
details, or personal data, in a personalized vault, which is encrypted
with the <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aam/https://nordpass.com/features/xchacha20-encryption/">XChaCha20 algorithm</a>.
On its site, NordPass claims this algorithm is “considered the future
of encryption,” though it doesn’t specify who is doing that considering.</p>
<p>That said, though it’s not a very widely used encryption method,
XChaCha20 seems secure and is used in all kinds of applications. The
best example is probably that it’s a popular way to secure <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/795336/what-is-shadowsocks-and-how-does-it-work/">Shadowsocks</a> connections.</p><p>However, the proof in any pudding is in the tasting, which in the case
of password managers is to take a look at their history. NordPass aces
this test with no breaches or scandals to speak of in its history.</p><p>Other products from the same company also have few blemishes on their record, though NordVPN suffered a <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aan/https://nordvpn.com/blog/official-response-datacenter-breach/">small breach in 2018</a>.
In this case, a hacker gained access to encrypted files. Though
customer data wasn’t at risk—encrypted files are useless without a
password—the company failed to disclose the breach until a few years
later.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-73" id="bordeaux-static-slot-36" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Though it’s not a deal breaker in my view, I can understand if you
would prefer to deal with a company that’s a bit more willing to admit
mistakes. Other than that, though, I see no reason not to use NordPass
for security reasons.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Should You Sign Up for NordPass?</h2>
<p><a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aau/https://nordpass.com/">NordPass</a>
has a good interface and decent security behind it. However, the lack
of organization and the increased price following your initial
subscription period makes it hard to recommend. As it stands, NordPass

there's also a limit of 4096 tokens per conversation. If you aren't sure
how many tokens your prompt uses, you can calculate that with OpenAI's <a href="https://platform.openai.com/tokenizer">Tokenizer tool</a>.</p><p>Are you getting a character limit error on <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/871071/what-is-chatgpt/">ChatGPT</a>,
or are you just curious to find out if this AI tool imposes any
restrictions on the number of characters you can use in your queries or
conversations? Let’s find out the answers to those questions in this
guide.</p>

<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_0"></a>What’s the ChatGPT Text Limit?</h2>
<p>When it comes to text queries on ChatGPT, OpenAI imposes two different restrictions.</p>
<p>The first restriction is on the characters that you can enter using
the input query box: you can’t enter a query longer than 4096
characters. If your query exceeds that number, truncate it so that it’s
within the allowed limit.</p><p>The second limit is on your conversations with ChatGPT. For this,
OpenAI imposes a restriction of 4096 tokens per conversation. If your
chat exceeds this limit, you’ll get <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/874410/fix-chatgpt-internal-server-error-and-other-common-errors/">an error message on the site</a>.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-60" id="bordeaux-static-slot-24" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Note that one ChatGPT token isn’t necessarily one character. Tokens
are calculated in a different ways, but generally, four characters equal
 one token.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_1"></a>How to Convert Characters to Tokens on ChatGPT</h2>
<p>If you have a query that you wish to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/884077/best-uses-for-chatgpt-4/">use on ChatGPT</a>,
but you aren’t sure how many tokens it will use, utilize ChatGPT’s
online Tokenizer to perform the character-to-token conversion.</p>
<p>To do that, open a web browser on your device and access the <a href="https://platform.openai.com/tokenizer" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Tokenizer</a> page. On this page, in the large text box, enter your full query.</p><p><img alt="Enter the text in the box." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-895938" height="444" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/1-chatgpt-enter-text.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Right beneath the text box, you’ll find the number of tokens that your
query will use. You’ll also see the total number of characters in your
query.</p><p><img alt="ChatGPT's token count." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-895939" height="373" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2-chatgpt-token-count.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p><p>That gives you an idea of whether or not you should be shrinking your prompt.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-64" id="bordeaux-static-slot-28" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_2"></a>How to Get Around ChatGPT’s Character Limit</h2>
<p>If your text query goes beyond ChatGPT’s allowed limit, but <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/871065/chatgpt-how-to-use-the-ai-chatbot-for-free/">you’d still like the chatbot to answer your query</a>, tweak your query in a few different ways to ensure it’s within the limit. Here are a few ideas on how to do that.</p><h3>Be Specific in Your Query</h3>
<p>If you ask ChatGPT a broad question, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/884058/reasons-chatgpt-is-giving-you-the-wrong-answers/">the site will provide you with a broad answer</a>,
increasing the chance of exceeding the allowed character limit. To fix
this, try to be as specific in your query as possible. This way, the
site will also be very specific in its answer to your questions.</p><p>For example, instead of asking ChatGPT to write an article on elephants,
ask it to write a 500-word article on Asian elephants. Since you’re
being more specific here, ChatGPT will have a narrow-downed answer for
your query.</p><h3>Break Down Your Tasks</h3>
<p>Another way to ensure you’re within ChatGPT’s character limit is to
break down your large task into multiple smaller tasks. Even <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882308/how-to-fix-a-chatgpt-error-in-body-stream/">if you receive an error</a> in this case, you can start a new conversation and use your smaller tasks to get your queries answered.</p>
<p>For example, instead of asking ChatGPT to write an entire article,
ask it to write the content for the introduction. Go one section at a
time, and even if you run into issues, you can always start a new chat
and keep going with your article headers.</p><h3>Regenerate the Response</h3>
<p>If <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/883092/fixed-there-was-an-error-generating-a-response-on-chatgpt/">ChatGPT has stopped responding to your query abruptly</a>
and you see a character limit error, get the site to generate a new
response for your query by selecting the “Regenerate Response” option.</p>
<p><img alt="" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-895941" height="254" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/3-chatgpt-regenerate-response.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>That will force the site to come up with an answer to your query again.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-66" id="bordeaux-static-slot-30" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<hr />
<p>And those are the restrictions ChatGPT imposes on its users! If you want to level-up your ChatGPT game, consider getting <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895374/what-is-chatgpt-plus/">a ChatGPT Plus subscription</a>, or learn <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/885918/how-to-get-an-openai-api-key/">how to get an OpenAI API key</a> which you can use to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882858/how-to-use-chatgpt-with-siri-and-your-iphone/">replace Siri with with ChatGPT on iPhone</a> or <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/889200/how-to-run-chatgpt-using-shellgpt-from-the-ubuntu-terminal/">run ChatGPT in your Ubuntu terminal</a>.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

Now, the base configuration of the M1 MacBook Air is at its lowest price ever of $750.</p>
<p>The MacBook Air M1 might be coming up to three years old right now,
but it’s still a great computer. The laptop is one of the last in
Apple’s lineup to come with an “older-style” design — there is no
MagSafe to be seen here, nor there’s a display notch. There is, however,
the M1 CPU, which is not only the first Apple-made custom Mac CPU
(Apple has been making chips for its phones and tablets for years, but
it only just took the leap into Macs in 2020), but it’s still very
performant even today.</p><p>The M1 chip slower than the M2, sure, but the difference isn’t as big as
you might think it is. According to Apple’s slides, the M2 is just 18%
faster than the M1, and in GPU performance, you can expect a 35%
increase in performance. Of course, these numbers do mean that the M2 is
the better purchase if you’re planning to pay full price, but Apple has
kept the M1 model of the MacBook Air on its lineup for a reason. It
serves as a cheaper option for people who would like to try out a Mac
with Apple silicon, but would rather save some money. After all, the M2
MacBook Air starts at $1,099 for the 13-inch version and $1,299 for the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/896982/15-inch-macbook-air-is-official-complete-with-m2-chip/">15-inch version</a>. It’s not exactly budget-friendly for many.</p><p>The MacBook Air M1 was launched at a $999 price point back in 2020,
and you can still buy it for that price from Apple’s own store. However,
it’s frequently discounted these days — you can usually grab one for
$899, and it’s even been down to as low as $799. Right now, though, you
can get one from Amazon for $749, an all-time low and a 25% discount on
one of Apple’s best products. It might be the company’s entry-level
laptop, but it’s still an amazing purchase even today.</p>
<p>Apple or Amazon hasn’t mentioned when the current sale price will end, or how much supply is available.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

	<div style="clear: both;"></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_0"></a>Using Windows Search</h2>
<p>The easiest way to find and <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/751568/how-to-launch-multiple-apps-at-once-on-windows-10/">launch any app on your PC</a> is to use Windows Search. You type the name of the app you want to open and Search retrieves it for you.</p>
<p>To open Notepad using this way, first, open Windows Search by either
clicking the “Search” box on your taskbar or opening the “Start” menu
and selecting the search box at the top.</p><p>Then, type “Notepad” and click the app in the search results.</p>
<p><img alt="Select Notepad." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902664" height="302" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/1-windows-search-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Your app is now open.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">From Run</h2>
<p>Windows’ Run box lets you <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/168896/10-useful-windows-commands-you-should-know/">run various commands</a> and open many apps on your PC. To use it for launching Notepad, first, open the tool by pressing Windows+R.</p>
<p>In the open box, type the following command and press Enter:</p><pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Type "notepad" and press Enter." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902665" height="318" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/2-run-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="558" /></p>
<p>Windows will launch the Notepad app.</p>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_2"></a>Using Start Menu</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/656737/how-to-pin-a-website-to-the-windows-10-taskbar-or-start-menu/">Windows’ “Start” menu hosts shortcuts</a> to many of your apps, including Notepad.</p>
<p>To use it, open the menu by either pressing the Windows key or selecting the menu icon on the taskbar.</p><p>When the menu opens, select “All Apps.” From the app list, choose Notepad to launch the app.</p>
<p><img alt="" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902666" height="469" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/3-start-menu-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>And that’s it.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">From Task Manager</h2>
<p>Usually, you’d use Task Manager to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/680236/how-to-force-quit-an-app-on-windows-10/">force-close apps</a>, but you can use this utility to launch apps as well.</p>
<p>To do that, right-click your “Start” menu icon and choose “<a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/898233/open-task-manager-in-windows-11/">Task Manager</a>.” On the tool window, select “Run New Task.”</p><p>In the open box, type the following and press Enter:</p>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Enter "notepad" and press Enter." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902667" height="350" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/4-task-manager-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="578" /></p>
<p>Task Manager will launch your Notepad app.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">From Taskbar</h2>
<p>Windows’ taskbar is limited in size so it can’t contain all your apps, but you can <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/740628/5-ways-to-pin-shortcuts-to-windows-10s-taskbar/">pin your favorite apps to it</a> to make launching those apps easier.</p>
<p>To do that for Notepad, first, open the “Start” menu and find “Notepad”. Right-click the app and choose “Pin to Taskbar.”</p><p><img alt="Select "Pin to Taskbar."" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902668" height="313" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/5-pin-notepad-to-taskbar.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>On your Windows taskbar, you now have a new shortcut, letting you directly launch the Notepad app.</p><p><img alt="Notepad on Windows taskbar." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902669" height="251" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/6-taskbar-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">From File Explorer</h2>
<p>To launch Notepad while you’re <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/864665/10-windows-file-explorer-features-you-should-be-using/">inside File Explorer</a>, you don’t have to close your current window. Use a command within your file manager to launch your <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/795509/why-you-need-a-plain-text-editor/">text editor</a>.</p>
<p>To do that, in your File Explorer’s address bar at the top, type the following command and press Enter:</p>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Type "notepad" and press Enter." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902670" height="370" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/7-file-explorer-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Notepad is now open on your screen.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Using Command Prompt</h2>
<p>If you prefer running commands, use a command in Command Prompt to open Notepad.</p>
<p>First, open the “Start” menu, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/235101/10-ways-to-open-the-command-prompt-in-windows-10/">find “Command Prompt”</a>, and launch the utility. Then, type the following command and press Enter:</p>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Type the "notepad" command and press Enter." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902671" height="341" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/8-command-prompt-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Let CMD open your favorite text editor.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">With PowerShell</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/163127/how-powershell-differs-from-the-windows-command-prompt/">Windows’ PowerShell utility is similar to Command Prompt</a> in many ways, and you can use this tool to launch your apps as well, including Notepad.</p>
<p>To do that, open the “Start” menu, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/662611/9-ways-to-open-powershell-in-windows-10/">find “PowerShell”</a>, and launch the utility. Then, type the following command and press Enter:</p>

<p><img alt="Use the "notepad" command." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902672" height="233" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/9-powershell-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Notepad is now open.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Using a Desktop Shortcut</h2>
<p>If you prefer launching apps from your desktop, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/436615/how-to-create-desktop-shortcuts-on-windows-10-the-easy-way/">add Notepad’s shortcut to your desktop</a> using a few easy steps.</p>
<p>First, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/881736/quickly-get-to-your-windows-11-desktop/">access your desktop</a> by pressing Windows+D. On the desktop, right-click anywhere blank and choose New > Shortcut.</p><p>On the “Create Shortcut” window, click the text field and type the following. Then, choose “Next.”</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-66" id="bordeaux-static-slot-29" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Enter "notepad" and select "Next."" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902673" height="500" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/10-create-notepad-desktop-shortcut.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="644" /></p>
<p>On the following screen, click the text field and type a name for your shortcut. Then, click “Finish.”</p><p><img alt="Enter a shortcut name and choose "Finish."" class="alignnone wp-image-902674 size-full" height="500" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/11-notepad-shortcut-name.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="641" /></p>
<p>Your shortcut is now ready, and you can double-click it to open your Notepad app.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Using a Keyboard Shortcut</h2>
<p>Windows offers no keyboard shortcut to launch the Notepad app, but you can <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/765374/how-to-set-a-keyboard-shortcut-to-open-a-folder-on-windows-11/">create one</a> to open your favorite app.</p>
<p>To do that, first, add Notepad’s shortcut to your desktop or any
other folder (using the above method). Your keyboard shortcut will
