<p><img alt="Windows desktop." class="type:primaryImage size-full wp-image-871969" data-pagespeed-no-defer="" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/DESKTOP-FOLDER.png?width=1198&trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />People are passionate about how the desktop on your PC or Mac should
look. Show someone a cluttered desktop full of files and you’ll probably
hear a repulsed gasp. Don’t feel bad about storing files on the
desktop. Everyone should do it.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">The Desktop Is Not a Launcher</h2>
<p>The way we use computers has changed drastically over the years.
There was a time when it made sense to use the desktop as your sort of
“launcher” for things to do. Nowadays, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/866279/its-time-to-stop-using-desktop-icons/">it’s not necessary to put icons on the desktop</a>. We have better methods for launching apps and finding files.</p><p>Think about it: how often do you actually <em>use</em> your desktop? There’s a good chance you launch apps from the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/821493/how-to-get-the-windows-10-start-menu-on-windows-11/">Start Menu</a>, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/207935/what-is-os-xs-launchpad-and-how-does-it-work/">Launchpad</a>, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/853679/10-windows-11-taskbar-features-you-should-be-using/">taskbar</a>,
or dock most of the time. Apps that haven’t been pinned for quick
access can easily be found by searching the Start Menu or Launchpad, and
the same can be said for files.</p><p>A lot of people look at a messy desktop and say, “how can you find
anything on there!?” Well, you don’t have to. We have much better ways
of finding and launching things on computers now.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">It’s Just a Folder</h2>
<p><img alt="Windows and Mac desktop folders." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-872082" height="341" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/2023-02-09_16-41-51a.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Here’s the truth: the desktop is just a <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/769913/the-computer-folder-is-40-how-the-xerox-star-created-the-desktop/">folder</a>. Open <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/864665/10-windows-file-explorer-features-you-should-be-using/">File Explorer</a> on your Windows PC or <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/716913/what-is-finder-on-a-mac/">Finder on your Mac</a>
and you’ll see it plain as day. People act like the desktop is hallowed
ground, but it’s really just another area to store stuff.</p><p>Personally, I have always <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/766068/how-to-create-a-folder-on-desktop-in-windows-11/">used the desktop as a place to store things</a>
that I know I won’t need forever. Things like images downloaded from
the internet that I want to share with a friend or on social media,
files I need for a specific one-time task, or current projects that I
don’t want to bury in folders within folders.</p><p>I use the desktop as an easily accessible folder, and I think that’s the
beauty of it. The fact that it’s the “Desktop” makes it super easy to
find anything stored on it. You can quickly view the desktop from
anywhere and it’s easy to find it in File Explorer or Finder.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Use It Like a Literal Desktop</h2>
<p>The funny thing is I use the desktop like the literal top of a
physical desk. When I look around my computer desk, I see an assortment
of things that represent what I’m working on at the moment. That’s
exactly what my computer desktop is like.</p><p>I have a filing cabinet for storing important documents I need to keep,
and I have special places for photos as well. On my computer, I have a <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/969/moving-your-personal-data-folders-in-windows-vista-the-easy-way/">Documents folder and Photos folder</a>. Not everything in my real life or digital life needs to be stored indefinitely in these locations.</p><p>I find I can keep my entire computer and physical workspace tidier if
I have somewhere to put temporary things. It’s much easier to clean off
a desk or delete all the files from the desktop than to go looking for
things in long-term storage.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Look, if a messy desktop gives you anxiety, I’m not going to tell you
to store files on it. But if you’re avoiding using the desktop just
because it’s the desktop, you should give it a second thought. You might
 love it.</p><p>Want to give it a try? Maybe it’s time to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/437370/how-to-hide-or-unhide-all-desktop-icons-on-windows/">unhide those Windows desktop icons</a>. <br /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Now those updates have reached
public beta status, so they are ready for wider testing — and you can
try them today.</p><p>Apple has released the public betas for <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/897049/whats-new-in-ios-17-and-ipados-17/">iOS 17</a> for iPhone, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/897049/whats-new-in-ios-17-and-ipados-17/">iPadOS 17</a> for iPad, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/897051/whats-new-in-macos-14-sonoma/">macOS Sonoma</a> for Mac, tvOS 17 for the Apple TV and <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/897007/the-apple-watch-is-getting-a-software-overhaul/">watchOS 10</a>
for the Apple Watch, following a few months of betas aimed exclusively
at app developers. The new public betas should, at least in theory, be
stable enough for use on a device you use every day. You can <a href="https://beta.apple.com/welcome">sign up for the public beta on Apple’s website</a>,
but we won’t have a clear idea about the stability until people have
used it for at least a few days, and some software (especially on macOS)
 is probably still broken.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-24" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>The iOS 17 update for iPhone won’t completely change the way you use
your phone, but it does include personalized lock screens for calls from
your contacts, live transcription of incoming voicemails, updates to
iMessage like stickers and improved location sharing, the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/896986/your-iphone-is-getting-a-journal-app-from-apple/">Journal app</a>, interactive widgets, improvements to AirDrop, and much more. It also has a new <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/897143/standby-will-turn-your-iphone-into-a-smart-display/">StandBy mode</a>, which turns your phone into something closer to a smart clock or smart display when it’s charging and not in use.</p><p><img alt="" class="wp-image-897077 size-full" data-credittext="Apple" height="358" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/standby_mode_iphone.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p><p>The iPadOS 17 update includes most of the same features, but with the
addition of Stage Manager improvements and other upgrades. The macOS
Sonoma release is relatively minor, but it does have new widgets
features, new modes for the camera, more powerful web apps in Safari, a
Game Mode that optimizes performance, and other changes. Installing
macOS preview builds is usually more risky than the other platforms,
though.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-63" id="bordeaux-static-slot-26" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>If you don’t feel comfortable installing the public betas right now —
which is usually a good idea for devices you rely on — you probably
won’t have to wait long for the final stable release. Last year’s iOS 16
update arrived on September 12, 2022, and iOS 15 before that was
released on September 20, 2021. Another release in September seems
likely, which is only two months away.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-64" id="bordeaux-static-slot-27" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>

As a result, it has come to the world’s attention with the same
aggressive marketing tactics; let’s see if it lives up to its hype.</p>
<p>Overall, NordVPN belongs among the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/780233/best-password-manager/">best password managers</a>,
though only by its fingernails. As a business option, it’s one of the
best out there, but its offerings for individuals fall flat, mainly
thanks to a confusing and slightly misleading pricing scheme.</p><div class="autotoc_wrapper"><strong class="moka_autotoc_heading">Table of Contents</strong><p></p><blockquote class="moka_autotoc"><p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_0">How Much Does NordPass Cost?</a><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_1" style="margin-left: 10px;">Is NordPass Included With NordVPN?</a></small><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_2" style="margin-left: 10px;">NordPass Business Plans</a></small><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_3">Using NordPass</a><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_4" style="margin-left: 10px;">The NordPass Client</a></small><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_5" style="margin-left: 10px;">Autofill and Other Features</a></small><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_6">Is NordPass Safe?</a><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882893/nordpass-password-manager-review/#autotoc_anchor_7">Should You Sign Up for NordPass?</a><br /></p></blockquote></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_0"></a>How Much Does NordPass Cost?</h2>
<p>When it comes to pricing, NordPass falls more or less within the same
range as the competition, though it’s far from straightforward to
figure out. There are different plans, and, like with NordVPN, the price
for first-time users is significantly lower than for anybody renewing
their subscription.</p>
<p>The first and maybe most interesting plan is the free one, which
offers all the basic functionality you’d expect from a password manager.
You can store all the passwords and other data you’d like, with the
only downside being a minor annoyance that you’re signed out whenever
you switch devices.</p><p>The paid plan removes this annoyance and adds a password as well as a
web scanner, which detects if any of your accounts have been breached.
However, there are some issues with pricing. For example, if you decide
to sign up for the regular plan for just one year, you pay just south of
 $24, which is a great price.</p>
<p><img alt="NordPass pricing for one year" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882894" height="406" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-1-year-pricing.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>However, when you renew, you pay just under $36, which is more or
less the same as what other password managers charge. Like with its
siblings <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/757119/surfshark-vs-nordvpn/">NordVPN and Surfshark</a>,
you need to look a little beyond the sticker price with NordPass to see
what it will cost a little further down the road. This is even more
important if you sign on for the two-year plan.</p><p><img alt="NordPass pricing for two years" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882895" height="398" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/NordPass-2-year-pricing.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>At just under $36, NordPass’ two year-plan is a great deal. However,
when you renew it, the password manager costs $72, which is double the
one-year plan. Sure, you’re saving money on the first go-around, but I
think NordPass should be a little clearer that it’s just a one-time
thing and you’re on the hook for the whole thing once the initial term
expires. </p><p>The Family plan suffers from the same issues but stands out in that
it’s more expensive than the competition. Its “real” price is $72 per
year, which gives you the same functionality of the regular plan only
for up to six people. At this price, it’s more expensive than 1Password
and almost double Bitwarden’s.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/877608/dashlane-password-manager-review/">Dashlane</a>
is a bit more expensive at $75 per year but includes a VPN for that
price, making that the better choice by far for people trying to squeeze
the most out of their subscriptions.</p><h3>Is NordPass Included With NordVPN?</h3>
<p>Speaking of VPNs, naturally, you can also buy a bundle that includes
both NordVPN and NordPass. Interestingly enough, NordVPN is the primary
product, so you buy that and get NordPass included, not the other way
around.</p>
<p>For the details of that pricing, you may want to check out my <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/850283/nordvpn-review/">NordVPN review</a>,
but overall I’m not blown away by the value on offer here. There are
some more shenanigans here, with steep discounts on first-time signup,
but the real price starts at $160 per year and goes higher—a lot
higher—from there.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-63" id="bordeaux-static-slot-26" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>In a market where you can get cheap VPNs like <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/849598/private-internet-access-vpn-review/">Private Internet Access</a> for $40 per year and even cheaper password managers like <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/874724/bitwarden-review/">Bitwarden</a> for $10 per year, paying $160 is just too much by any stretch of the imagination.</p><h3>NordPass Business Plans</h3>
<p>Finally, NordPass also offers a Business plan. It costs $3.99 per
user per month if you sign up for one year or $3.59 per user per month
on the two-year plan, without any re-up issues like with the personal
plans. For this price, you can have up to 250 users per plan, and you
get access to a company-wide dashboard and settings, plus SSO through
Google Workspace.</p>
<p>Overall, this is a pretty good deal. It’s a good whack cheaper than
most other password managers’ business plans, which start around $5 per
user per month but can get as high as $8. That said, different providers
throw in different extras with these advanced plans, so you should
definitely shop around before making any decisions.</p><p>There is also an Enterprise plan which offers more SSO options, plus
some other advanced sharing features. The price you’ll need to negotiate
 with NordPass.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-65" id="bordeaux-static-slot-28" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_3"></a>Using NordPass</h2>
<p>As much as I dislike NordPass’ pricing scheme, I have to say its ease
of use is pretty good, though I found it a little less smooth than some
other password managers. Part of this is unique to NordPass: For some
reason, the developers insist that you have to have a client running on
your desktop to use it rather than the web client most competitors use.</p>
<p>The client is available for <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aad/https://nordpass.com/download/windows/">Windows</a>, <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aae/https://nordpass.com/download/macos/">Mac</a>, and <a href="https://snapcraft.io/nordpass">Linux</a>.
However, I had some pretty serious issues getting it to work on my
Debian system (Mint 20.3, to be exact). After having the app crash more
than once, I switched to my backup Windows machine, where it worked a
lot better, though I did have to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/754945/how-to-restart-a-windows-11-pc/">restart Windows 11</a> twice. NordPass doesn’t get high marks for stability.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-66" id="bordeaux-static-slot-29" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Besides desktop, NordPass can also be used on mobile devices, namely <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aaf/https://nordpass.com/download/android/">Android</a> and <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aag/https://nordpass.com/download/ios/">iPhone/iPad</a>.
I had far fewer issues here, I have to say, so maybe the desktop issues
have more to do with the relative novelty of the OSes involved.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-67" id="bordeaux-static-slot-30" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h3><a name="autotoc_anchor_4"></a>The NordPass Client</h3>
<p>Once you get it working, the client is pretty good. The presentation
is slick, with clear categories for all the different kinds of items you
can add, like passwords, secure notes, credit cards, and more. I also
like how NordPass gets you familiar with the program using a small
checklist of tasks.</p><p><img alt="Getting started with NordPass" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882901" height="424" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Nordpass-main.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>The whole thing feels a lot more polished than most other password managers, with even top-shelf providers like <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/877608/dashlane-password-manager-review/">Dashlane</a>
feeling like throwbacks to an earlier era. However, it’s all surface
level, and once you start digging, you’ll find there’s not much beyond
that initial impression.</p><p><img alt="NordPass password list" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882902" height="425" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-passwords.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />NordPass presents entries well in a simple list that gives you a decent
summary of what’s going on. That said, there don’t seem to be any
organization options to speak of for each category, meaning that if you
have more than a few password entries, you’re going to have to search
for them manually. There are no tags like in <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/872414/1password-review/">1Password</a>.</p><p>The closest thing to organization is that you can add folders, but they
exist outside of the set options. For example, I created a folder for
all the media sites I have an account with, but it’s not nested under
the passwords label, instead existing alongside it. It makes it hard to
organize your passwords.</p><p>There are also few options for the entries themselves. Most password
managers give you the option to add all kinds of notes, or add extra
security—or even let some passwords be used automatically. None of that
with NordPass. You get to add a username, password, and a few custom
options, and that’s it, pretty much.</p><p><img alt="Adding an item in NordPass" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882896" height="428" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-add-item.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>As a result, NordPass is very easy for beginners to get to grasp with.
Some of our favorites like Dashlane or 1Password—not to mention <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/879987/keepassxc-password-manager-review/">KeePassXC</a>—
can be a bit intimidating for first-time users. However, I feel
NordPass has swung too far the other way, offering a program that’s just
 too light.</p><h3>Autofill and Other Features</h3>
<p>Of course, no password manager would be complete without a browser
extension. In the case of NordPass, the extension is available for <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aah/https://nordpass.com/download/chrome/">Chrome</a>, <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aai/https://nordpass.com/download/edge/">Microsoft Edge</a>, <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aaj/https://nordpass.com/download/firefox/">Mozilla Firefox</a>, <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aak/https://nordpass.com/download/opera/">Opera</a>, and <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aal/https://nordpass.com/download/safari/">Safari</a>.
It’s extremely lightweight, offering no menu or anything, all it does
is pop up a small NordPass icon on any empty login field.</p>
<p><img alt="NordPass autofill on Netflix site" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882897" height="430" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-autofill.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>I have to say, the autofill function works very well and is pretty
reliable. Also, since NordPass never seems to switch itself off, you
only need to unlock once per device session, so it saves some hassle.</p><p>Other basics that NordPass has included are the now-ubiquitous breach
scanner, which scans the web to see if any of your personal details
have shown up in breached files. It mainly seems to check if your email
accounts are associated with a hack, as far as I can tell.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-71" id="bordeaux-static-slot-34" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p><img alt="NordPass breach scanner" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-882898" height="426" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/nordpass-breach-scanner.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>There’s also a password checker that lets you know if your password
is strong or weak and how to fix any issues. It seems to have a strong
preference for symbols in passwords, but it’s solid overall.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Is NordPass Safe?</h2>
<p>Overall, NordPass seems to be a secure place to keep your passwords.
It stores all the information you enter, be it passwords, credit card
details, or personal data, in a personalized vault, which is encrypted
with the <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aam/https://nordpass.com/features/xchacha20-encryption/">XChaCha20 algorithm</a>.
On its site, NordPass claims this algorithm is “considered the future
of encryption,” though it doesn’t specify who is doing that considering.</p>
<p>That said, though it’s not a very widely used encryption method,
XChaCha20 seems secure and is used in all kinds of applications. The
best example is probably that it’s a popular way to secure <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/795336/what-is-shadowsocks-and-how-does-it-work/">Shadowsocks</a> connections.</p><p>However, the proof in any pudding is in the tasting, which in the case
of password managers is to take a look at their history. NordPass aces
this test with no breaches or scandals to speak of in its history.</p><p>Other products from the same company also have few blemishes on their record, though NordVPN suffered a <a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aan/https://nordvpn.com/blog/official-response-datacenter-breach/">small breach in 2018</a>.
In this case, a hacker gained access to encrypted files. Though
customer data wasn’t at risk—encrypted files are useless without a
password—the company failed to disclose the breach until a few years
later.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-73" id="bordeaux-static-slot-36" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Though it’s not a deal breaker in my view, I can understand if you
would prefer to deal with a company that’s a bit more willing to admit
mistakes. Other than that, though, I see no reason not to use NordPass
for security reasons.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Should You Sign Up for NordPass?</h2>
<p><a data-trxnetwork="cj" href="https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/3607085/type/am/sid/882893-xid-fr1689230435aau/https://nordpass.com/">NordPass</a>
has a good interface and decent security behind it. However, the lack
of organization and the increased price following your initial
subscription period makes it hard to recommend. As it stands, NordPass
doesn’t have anything that makes it stand out in a good way except for
companies looking for a cheap password solution. Anybody else may want
to look elsewhere.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

there's also a limit of 4096 tokens per conversation. If you aren't sure
how many tokens your prompt uses, you can calculate that with OpenAI's <a href="https://platform.openai.com/tokenizer">Tokenizer tool</a>.</p><p>Are you getting a character limit error on <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/871071/what-is-chatgpt/">ChatGPT</a>,
or are you just curious to find out if this AI tool imposes any
restrictions on the number of characters you can use in your queries or
conversations? Let’s find out the answers to those questions in this
guide.</p>
<div class="autotoc_wrapper"><strong class="moka_autotoc_heading">Table of Contents</strong><p></p><blockquote class="moka_autotoc"><p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895929/what-is-the-character-limit-for-chatgpt/#autotoc_anchor_0">What's the ChatGPT Text Limit?</a><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895929/what-is-the-character-limit-for-chatgpt/#autotoc_anchor_1">How to Convert Characters to Tokens on ChatGPT</a><br /><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895929/what-is-the-character-limit-for-chatgpt/#autotoc_anchor_2">How to Get Around ChatGPT's Character Limit</a><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895929/what-is-the-character-limit-for-chatgpt/#autotoc_anchor_3" style="margin-left: 10px;">Be Specific in Your Query</a></small><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895929/what-is-the-character-limit-for-chatgpt/#autotoc_anchor_4" style="margin-left: 10px;">Break Down Your Tasks</a></small><br /><small><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895929/what-is-the-character-limit-for-chatgpt/#autotoc_anchor_5" style="margin-left: 10px;">Regenerate the Response</a></small><br /></p></blockquote></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_0"></a>What’s the ChatGPT Text Limit?</h2>
<p>When it comes to text queries on ChatGPT, OpenAI imposes two different restrictions.</p>
<p>The first restriction is on the characters that you can enter using
the input query box: you can’t enter a query longer than 4096
characters. If your query exceeds that number, truncate it so that it’s
within the allowed limit.</p><p>The second limit is on your conversations with ChatGPT. For this,
OpenAI imposes a restriction of 4096 tokens per conversation. If your
chat exceeds this limit, you’ll get <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/874410/fix-chatgpt-internal-server-error-and-other-common-errors/">an error message on the site</a>.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-60" id="bordeaux-static-slot-24" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Note that one ChatGPT token isn’t necessarily one character. Tokens
are calculated in a different ways, but generally, four characters equal
 one token.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_1"></a>How to Convert Characters to Tokens on ChatGPT</h2>
<p>If you have a query that you wish to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/884077/best-uses-for-chatgpt-4/">use on ChatGPT</a>,
but you aren’t sure how many tokens it will use, utilize ChatGPT’s
online Tokenizer to perform the character-to-token conversion.</p>
<p>To do that, open a web browser on your device and access the <a href="https://platform.openai.com/tokenizer" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Tokenizer</a> page. On this page, in the large text box, enter your full query.</p><p><img alt="Enter the text in the box." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-895938" height="444" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/1-chatgpt-enter-text.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Right beneath the text box, you’ll find the number of tokens that your
query will use. You’ll also see the total number of characters in your
query.</p><p><img alt="ChatGPT's token count." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-895939" height="373" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2-chatgpt-token-count.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p><p>That gives you an idea of whether or not you should be shrinking your prompt.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-64" id="bordeaux-static-slot-28" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_2"></a>How to Get Around ChatGPT’s Character Limit</h2>
<p>If your text query goes beyond ChatGPT’s allowed limit, but <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/871065/chatgpt-how-to-use-the-ai-chatbot-for-free/">you’d still like the chatbot to answer your query</a>, tweak your query in a few different ways to ensure it’s within the limit. Here are a few ideas on how to do that.</p><h3>Be Specific in Your Query</h3>
<p>If you ask ChatGPT a broad question, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/884058/reasons-chatgpt-is-giving-you-the-wrong-answers/">the site will provide you with a broad answer</a>,
increasing the chance of exceeding the allowed character limit. To fix
this, try to be as specific in your query as possible. This way, the
site will also be very specific in its answer to your questions.</p><p>For example, instead of asking ChatGPT to write an article on elephants,
ask it to write a 500-word article on Asian elephants. Since you’re
being more specific here, ChatGPT will have a narrow-downed answer for
your query.</p><h3>Break Down Your Tasks</h3>
<p>Another way to ensure you’re within ChatGPT’s character limit is to
break down your large task into multiple smaller tasks. Even <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882308/how-to-fix-a-chatgpt-error-in-body-stream/">if you receive an error</a> in this case, you can start a new conversation and use your smaller tasks to get your queries answered.</p>
<p>For example, instead of asking ChatGPT to write an entire article,
ask it to write the content for the introduction. Go one section at a
time, and even if you run into issues, you can always start a new chat
and keep going with your article headers.</p><h3>Regenerate the Response</h3>
<p>If <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/883092/fixed-there-was-an-error-generating-a-response-on-chatgpt/">ChatGPT has stopped responding to your query abruptly</a>
and you see a character limit error, get the site to generate a new
response for your query by selecting the “Regenerate Response” option.</p>
<p><img alt="" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-895941" height="254" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/3-chatgpt-regenerate-response.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>That will force the site to come up with an answer to your query again.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-66" id="bordeaux-static-slot-30" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<hr />
<p>And those are the restrictions ChatGPT imposes on its users! If you want to level-up your ChatGPT game, consider getting <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/895374/what-is-chatgpt-plus/">a ChatGPT Plus subscription</a>, or learn <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/885918/how-to-get-an-openai-api-key/">how to get an OpenAI API key</a> which you can use to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/882858/how-to-use-chatgpt-with-siri-and-your-iphone/">replace Siri with with ChatGPT on iPhone</a> or <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/889200/how-to-run-chatgpt-using-shellgpt-from-the-ubuntu-terminal/">run ChatGPT in your Ubuntu terminal</a>.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

Now, the base configuration of the M1 MacBook Air is at its lowest price ever of $750.</p>
<p>The MacBook Air M1 might be coming up to three years old right now,
but it’s still a great computer. The laptop is one of the last in
Apple’s lineup to come with an “older-style” design — there is no
MagSafe to be seen here, nor there’s a display notch. There is, however,
the M1 CPU, which is not only the first Apple-made custom Mac CPU
(Apple has been making chips for its phones and tablets for years, but
it only just took the leap into Macs in 2020), but it’s still very
performant even today.</p><p>The M1 chip slower than the M2, sure, but the difference isn’t as big as
you might think it is. According to Apple’s slides, the M2 is just 18%
faster than the M1, and in GPU performance, you can expect a 35%
increase in performance. Of course, these numbers do mean that the M2 is
the better purchase if you’re planning to pay full price, but Apple has
kept the M1 model of the MacBook Air on its lineup for a reason. It
serves as a cheaper option for people who would like to try out a Mac
with Apple silicon, but would rather save some money. After all, the M2
MacBook Air starts at $1,099 for the 13-inch version and $1,299 for the <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/896982/15-inch-macbook-air-is-official-complete-with-m2-chip/">15-inch version</a>. It’s not exactly budget-friendly for many.</p><p>The MacBook Air M1 was launched at a $999 price point back in 2020,
and you can still buy it for that price from Apple’s own store. However,
it’s frequently discounted these days — you can usually grab one for
$899, and it’s even been down to as low as $799. Right now, though, you
can get one from Amazon for $749, an all-time low and a 25% discount on
one of Apple’s best products. It might be the company’s entry-level
laptop, but it’s still an amazing purchase even today.</p>
<p>Apple or Amazon hasn’t mentioned when the current sale price will end, or how much supply is available.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_0"></a>Using Windows Search</h2>
<p>The easiest way to find and <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/751568/how-to-launch-multiple-apps-at-once-on-windows-10/">launch any app on your PC</a> is to use Windows Search. You type the name of the app you want to open and Search retrieves it for you.</p>
<p>To open Notepad using this way, first, open Windows Search by either
clicking the “Search” box on your taskbar or opening the “Start” menu
and selecting the search box at the top.</p><p>Then, type “Notepad” and click the app in the search results.</p>
<p><img alt="Select Notepad." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902664" height="302" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/1-windows-search-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Your app is now open.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">From Run</h2>
<p>Windows’ Run box lets you <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/168896/10-useful-windows-commands-you-should-know/">run various commands</a> and open many apps on your PC. To use it for launching Notepad, first, open the tool by pressing Windows+R.</p>
<p>In the open box, type the following command and press Enter:</p><pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Type "notepad" and press Enter." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902665" height="318" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/2-run-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="558" /></p>
<p>Windows will launch the Notepad app.</p>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_2"></a>Using Start Menu</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/656737/how-to-pin-a-website-to-the-windows-10-taskbar-or-start-menu/">Windows’ “Start” menu hosts shortcuts</a> to many of your apps, including Notepad.</p>
<p>To use it, open the menu by either pressing the Windows key or selecting the menu icon on the taskbar.</p><p>When the menu opens, select “All Apps.” From the app list, choose Notepad to launch the app.</p>
<p><img alt="" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902666" height="469" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/3-start-menu-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>And that’s it.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">From Task Manager</h2>
<p>Usually, you’d use Task Manager to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/680236/how-to-force-quit-an-app-on-windows-10/">force-close apps</a>, but you can use this utility to launch apps as well.</p>
<p>To do that, right-click your “Start” menu icon and choose “<a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/898233/open-task-manager-in-windows-11/">Task Manager</a>.” On the tool window, select “Run New Task.”</p><p>In the open box, type the following and press Enter:</p>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Enter "notepad" and press Enter." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902667" height="350" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/4-task-manager-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="578" /></p>
<p>Task Manager will launch your Notepad app.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">From Taskbar</h2>
<p>Windows’ taskbar is limited in size so it can’t contain all your apps, but you can <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/740628/5-ways-to-pin-shortcuts-to-windows-10s-taskbar/">pin your favorite apps to it</a> to make launching those apps easier.</p>
<p>To do that for Notepad, first, open the “Start” menu and find “Notepad”. Right-click the app and choose “Pin to Taskbar.”</p><p><img alt="Select "Pin to Taskbar."" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902668" height="313" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/5-pin-notepad-to-taskbar.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>On your Windows taskbar, you now have a new shortcut, letting you directly launch the Notepad app.</p><p><img alt="Notepad on Windows taskbar." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902669" height="251" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/6-taskbar-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">From File Explorer</h2>
<p>To launch Notepad while you’re <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/864665/10-windows-file-explorer-features-you-should-be-using/">inside File Explorer</a>, you don’t have to close your current window. Use a command within your file manager to launch your <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/795509/why-you-need-a-plain-text-editor/">text editor</a>.</p>
<p>To do that, in your File Explorer’s address bar at the top, type the following command and press Enter:</p>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Type "notepad" and press Enter." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902670" height="370" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/7-file-explorer-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Notepad is now open on your screen.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Using Command Prompt</h2>
<p>If you prefer running commands, use a command in Command Prompt to open Notepad.</p>
<p>First, open the “Start” menu, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/235101/10-ways-to-open-the-command-prompt-in-windows-10/">find “Command Prompt”</a>, and launch the utility. Then, type the following command and press Enter:</p>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Type the "notepad" command and press Enter." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902671" height="341" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/8-command-prompt-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Let CMD open your favorite text editor.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">With PowerShell</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/163127/how-powershell-differs-from-the-windows-command-prompt/">Windows’ PowerShell utility is similar to Command Prompt</a> in many ways, and you can use this tool to launch your apps as well, including Notepad.</p>
<p>To do that, open the “Start” menu, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/662611/9-ways-to-open-powershell-in-windows-10/">find “PowerShell”</a>, and launch the utility. Then, type the following command and press Enter:</p>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Use the "notepad" command." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902672" height="233" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/9-powershell-notepad.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p>
<p>Notepad is now open.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Using a Desktop Shortcut</h2>
<p>If you prefer launching apps from your desktop, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/436615/how-to-create-desktop-shortcuts-on-windows-10-the-easy-way/">add Notepad’s shortcut to your desktop</a> using a few easy steps.</p>
<p>First, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/881736/quickly-get-to-your-windows-11-desktop/">access your desktop</a> by pressing Windows+D. On the desktop, right-click anywhere blank and choose New > Shortcut.</p><p>On the “Create Shortcut” window, click the text field and type the following. Then, choose “Next.”</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-66" id="bordeaux-static-slot-29" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<pre>notepad</pre>
<p><img alt="Enter "notepad" and select "Next."" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902673" height="500" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/10-create-notepad-desktop-shortcut.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="644" /></p>
<p>On the following screen, click the text field and type a name for your shortcut. Then, click “Finish.”</p><p><img alt="Enter a shortcut name and choose "Finish."" class="alignnone wp-image-902674 size-full" height="500" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/11-notepad-shortcut-name.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="641" /></p>
<p>Your shortcut is now ready, and you can double-click it to open your Notepad app.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Using a Keyboard Shortcut</h2>
<p>Windows offers no keyboard shortcut to launch the Notepad app, but you can <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/765374/how-to-set-a-keyboard-shortcut-to-open-a-folder-on-windows-11/">create one</a> to open your favorite app.</p>
<p>To do that, first, add Notepad’s shortcut to your desktop or any
other folder (using the above method). Your keyboard shortcut will
launch this app shortcut, which will open Notepad.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-69" id="bordeaux-static-slot-32" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>Then, right-click your shortcut and choose “Properties.” Access the
“Shortcut” tab, click the “Shortcut Key” field, and press the key
combination you want to use. Then, at the bottom, select “Apply”
followed by “OK.”</p><p><img alt="Assign a keyboard shortcut to Notepad." class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902675" height="500" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/12-create-notepad-keyboard-shortcut.png?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="346" /></p>
<p>And that’s it. Your keyboard shortcut has been created. Press the key
combination you specified above each time you want to launch Notepad on
 your PC.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-71" id="bordeaux-static-slot-34" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading"><a name="autotoc_anchor_10"></a>From Right-Click Menu</h2>
<p>If you’d like to <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/1000/add-open-with-notepad-to-the-context-menu-for-all-files/">add Notepad’s shortcut to your right-click menu</a>
(also known as context menu), add a value to your Windows registry.
This value tells Windows to display a shortcut to the Notepad app
whenever you right-click on your PC.</p>
<blockquote class="admonishment_note"><strong>Note:</strong> We don’t

<p> <br /><img alt="Microsoft Edge logo" class="type:primaryImage alignnone size-full wp-image-888914" data-pagespeed-no-defer="" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/edge-1.jpg?width=1198&trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Have you ever opened a website just for it to prompt you to turn on
notifications for it immediately? Or even worse — have you found
yourself accepting those prompts, only for that website to proceed to
bombard you with spammy notifications? Microsoft is hoping to end that
in its Edge browser</p><p><a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/888506/stop-using-microsoft-edge/">Microsoft Edge</a>
has been in the news lately for its AI additions, but there have been a
few other features in the pipeline. A common method of spam
distribution over the past few years is through website notifications,
with those websites throwing spam via browser notifications at you.
You’re safe as long as you block notifications from that website, but if
you make the mistake of hitting “Accept,” all hell breaks loose. This
is what Microsoft Edge is aiming to fix here.</p><p><img alt="" class="size-full wp-image-903518" height="300" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Picture4.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="502" /></p><p>Now, Microsoft Edge is blocking these request prompts on “unfamiliar”
sites. The prompt will still be there, but it will be shown quietly on
the search bar with a bell icon. The browser will also explain that the
website was considered “unfamiliar” and therefore notifications were
blocked just in case. If you want to still enable notifications for that
website despite the potential risks, you’re welcome to go up to the
bell icon and click “Allow.”</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-59" id="bordeaux-static-slot-25" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>This is not the only measure Microsoft is working on. The company’s
Digital Crimes Unit has also worked to analyze these notifications and
identify their providers in hand with law enforcement. Microsoft says
that it has removed notification privileges from many of the websites
sending out these notifications. While it’s next to impossible to go
over all of them, this does mean that most of the (bigger) sites might
not send you scammy notifications at all. And for those who still do,
the feature we mentioned above should still help you keep them at bay.</p><p><img alt="" class="size-full wp-image-903517" height="464" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Picture3.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /></p><p>Finally, if you happen to turn on notifications, there’s also an easy
way to stop the bombarding if you’re regretting the mistake. Simply
right-click on one of the scammy notifications and click on “turn off
all notifications.” This gives you an easy way to revert the mistake and
 bring peace back to your computer.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-61" id="bordeaux-static-slot-27" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<p>These changes are rolling out now, so make sure to keep your browser updated.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-62" id="bordeaux-static-slot-28" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>

<p><img alt="" class="type:primaryImage size-medium wp-image-902129" data-pagespeed-no-defer="" height="360" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/52420929046_ef30d9692a_o.jpg?width=1198&trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Share Live Photos that have been looped or bounced directly to apps or
construct a workflow using iOS Shortcuts to export a GIF. Alternatively,
download a third-party app like GIPHY and shoot, convert, and dress-up
GIFs ready for export.</p><p>Looping animated GIFs became popular during the early days of the
internet when slow connection speeds made streaming video prohibitive.
The format never really went away, so it’s handy to know how to produce
GIFs right on your iPhone.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Share Live Photos as GIFs</h2>
<p>Live Photos are still images that capture a small amount of motion in
a small video file every time you hit the shutter. You can peruse your
collection of Live Photos by launching Photos and then heading to Albums
 > Live Photos.</p><p><img alt="Find the Live Photos album in the Photos app" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902108" height="394" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/live_photos_album.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>To make sure you’re capturing a Live Photo when you take a picture, look
for the Live Photos icon above or to the side of the viewfinder. It
looks like three circles. If you see a line through the middle of it,
that means the feature is off. Tap it to turn it on. </p><p><img alt="Enable Live Photos in Camera app" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902109" height="190" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/live_photo_camera.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Live Photos will be converted into GIFs automatically, depending on
where you share them. The first thing you need to do is locate a Live
Photo within the Photos app. Open it and you should see a “Live” button
appear in the top-left corner of the image with a drop-down arrow.</p><p><img alt="Live Photo drop-down selector" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902110" height="157" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/live_photo_button.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>Tap on the arrow and choose “Loop” or “Bounce” from the menu that
appears. Loop will attempt to seamlessly loop your Live Photo, with
varying degrees of success. Loop works best for repetitive motions that
blend well, shot from a relatively static perspective. Bounce simply
plays then reverses the whole Live Photo.</p><p><img alt="Choose between Live, Loop, and Bounce" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902111" height="516" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/live_loop_bounce.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Pick one and preview the effect, then when you’re ready to share hit the
“Share” button (which looks like a box with an arrow pointing upwards).
Now pick a destination app, like WhatsApp, and your Live Photo should
send as a GIF. In some apps, the loop will be sent as a video, in which
case you might want to use Shortcuts instead.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Turn Live Photos or Videos into GIFs with Shortcuts</h2>
<p>If your Live Photo isn’t sharing as a GIF, you can force your iPhone
to create a GIF using the Shortcuts app instead. This technique is also
ideal for videos. For Live Photos you should follow the instructions
above to “Loop” or “Bounce” the animation before you begin.</p>
<p>For videos, you should trim your clip down to size before you attempt
to convert it to a GIF. To do this, find the video in your Photos app
then tap on “Edit” in the top-right corner of the screen. You can now
grab the start and stop points on the video timeline that appears to
trim your clip to size, then preview it with the “Play” button. Hit
“Done” to save.</p><p><img alt="Trim a video to size on your iPhone" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902114" height="259" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/trim_video.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />With your Live Photo or video ready to go, it’s time to build a shortcut
that will export it to GIF and save it to your Photos app. To do this,
launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone or re-download it from the <a href="https://apps.apple.com/au/app/shortcuts/id915249334?at=1010l392g&ct=htg902042">App Store</a> if you have previously deleted it. <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/764636/mac-shortcuts-actions-youll-actually-use/">Shortcuts is an app that lets you create time-saving workflows</a>, and it has all sorts of uses.</p><p><strong>Note: </strong>If you’d rather just download this Shortcut
there’s a link at the end of this section. Understanding how the
shortcut is built and what options you have available to you is useful

<p>Open Shortcuts and hit the “+” plus icon in the top-right corner of the screen to create a new workflow.</p><p><img alt="Create new shortcut in Shortcuts for iPhone" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902115" height="327" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/shortcuts_new.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>Tap the “Add Action” button to reveal a list of categories. </p><p><img alt="Add Action to iPhone shortcut" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902116" height="301" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/add_action.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Search for “GIF” and choose “Make GIF” from the results that appear.</p><p><img alt="Add the "Make GIF" action to your shortcut" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902120" height="409" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/search_gif.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>The action will be added to your workflow. Next, tap on the “Content”
button that appears and choose “Shortcut Input” from the list. We’re
doing this so that the shortcut targets the video or Live Photo you have
open whenever it is triggered. </p><p><img alt="Make GIF from "Shortcut Input" in Shortcuts" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902122" height="393" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/shortcut_input.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>Tap the arrow that appears within the action to reveal some options,
including timing under “Seconds per Photo” and an “Auto Size” toggle. Be
aware that turning off auto-sizing will cause your GIFs to be massive.
You can always edit these settings later if you’re unhappy with the
results.</p><p><img alt="Change GIF parameters in the action field" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902121" height="371" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/gif_settings.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>A new action will appear above the “Make GIF” action you added. This
allows you to limit the shortcut to set categories of media and dictate
where it appears across the operating system.</p><p>To keep things tidy, tap on the “Images and XX More” variable. Disable
any categories you don’t want. We limited it to Images, Media, and
Files.</p><p><img alt="Limit your shortcut to certain content" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902123" height="369" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/images_media_files.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />Now tap on the “Nowhere” variable and make sure “Show in Share Sheet” is
enabled. This will allow you to trigger the shortcut from the “Share”
option you see when viewing media.</p><p>Finally, use the search box at the bottom of the screen to search for
“quick look” and add a Quick Look action to the end of your workflow.
This will preview the GIF you just made and makes it easy to share or
save the output.</p><p><img alt="Add the "Quick Look" action to your shortcut" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902125" height="157" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/add_quick_look.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>All that’s left to do is give your new shortcut a name and icon at the
top of the screen. Hit “Done” and save your shortcut. It will appear in
the Shortcuts app alongside your other workflows. </p><p><img alt="" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902126" height="205" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/name_shortcut.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>To use your new shortcut, find a Live Photo or video and hit the “Share”
button. From the list of actions that appears, choose “Make GIF” or
whatever name you gave your shortcut. Wait a second and your iPhone will
convert your media into GIF format. You’ll then see a preview of the
GIF. </p><p><img alt="Trigger your shortcut from the Share Sheet" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902127" height="334" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/share_sheet_shortcut.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" /> </p><p>Use the “Share” button in the bottom-left corner to save, share,
AirDrop, and more. When you hit “Done” your GIF will be discarded. </p><p>The GIF above was created from a Live Photo using “Loop” with “Auto
Size” enabled. We used a “Seconds per Photo” value of 0.1 seconds to
achieve slightly faster motion. <a href="https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/2fef5aa70c9d4974a36c8405720953ee">Download this shortcut</a> and add it to your Shortcuts app.</p><div class="future_hybrid_paragraph"><div class="bordeaux-slot" data-feat-ref="bordeaux-feat-id-79" id="bordeaux-static-slot-43" style="display: flex; flex-direction: column; margin: auto;"></div></div>
<h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">Capture GIFs with Your Camera using GIPHY</h2>
<p>When all else fails, third-party apps come to the rescue. <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/giphy-the-gif-search-engine/id974748812?at=1010l392g&ct=htg902042">GIPHY for iPhone</a> isn’t
just a repository of memes but a fully-fledged GIF camera and
converter. You can use the app to shoot GIFs using your iPhone camera
and convert existing videos and Live Photos while adding filters,
stickers, and effects. The app has a pretty self-explanatory interface,
and most functions appear under the “Create” button.</p><p><img alt="Create GIFs with GIPHY's "Create" feature" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-902128" height="411" src="https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/giphy_create.jpg?trim=1,1&bg-color=000&pad=1,1" width="640" />GIPHY lets you save videos and GIFs, and there’s no need to upload your
files to the internet either. Best of all there are no watermarks to
contend with. It’s a solid choice if you’re not getting on with built-in
apps like Photos and Shortcuts.</p><h2 aria-level="2" role="heading">GIFs that Keep on Giving</h2>
<p>Animated GIFs are synonymous with the early internet for many. By
using an ungodly amount of compression and a handful of frames you could
put up a pretty “under construction” image on your GeoCities page, or
stand out among a sea of affiliate sites in a website’s sidebar.</p>
<p>Despite its relatively poor quality, stuttery animation, and <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/745906/what-is-dithering-in-computer-graphics/">heavy use of dithering</a> the GIF is still alive and well. If you’re as charmed by GIFs as we are, <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/793929/5-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-gifs/">learn more about one of the web’s best-loved format</a>s.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>
