Hodgson admitted his Crystal Palace team "capitulated" as Championship
side Bristol City knocked a third Premier League club out of this
season's Carabao Cup to reach the quarter-finals.
Palace, bottom
of the table, had taken the lead at Ashton Gate through Bakary Sako's
low finish following Ruben Loftus-Cheek's clever pass. But two goals in five minutes before half-time turned the tie on its head, as an awful mistake by Patrick van Aanholt let in Matty Taylor to equalise before substitute Milan Djuric pounced after a long throw by Iceland defender Hordur Magnusson.
Defender Joe Bryan's unstoppable shot made it 3-1 before Callum O'Dowda completed Palace's misery from outside the area.
"We contrived to give away goals at important times, and in the end we are on the back of a heavy defeat," said Hodgson.
"For the first 45 minutes we had arguably the better of the game.
"I am very disappointed for the fans who came all this way, and I am disappointed by the way we capitulated."
City, seventh in English football's second tier, are three games away from the Wembley final on 25 February.
Lee Johnson's team had overcome top-flight sides Watford and Stoke City to reach this stage and they embarrassed Hodgson's Palace on their way to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1989.
Hodgson, who managed City between January and April 1982, made nine changes to the side that started last Saturday's 1-0 league defeat at Newcastle.
His fringe players were overrun despite taking the lead with their first away goal since 23 April.
"I took a risk - I take responsibility for that," said the former England manager.
"It was an opportunity for them to knock on the door of the first team and threaten the places of the team I have played in the last two games.
"I am bitterly disappointed that didn't work out because there were very few performances that made me think I was picking the wrong team."
This was Palace's fifth defeat in seven games since Hodgson replaced Frank de Boer on 12 September.
The Eagles have conceded 16 times in those seven games.
On a memorable night for the hosts, Bristol City took their tally to 14 goals in four ties in this season's League Cup despite making five changes of their own.
They will discover their quarter-final opponents when the draw is made on Thursday at 16:00 BST.
